Kochanova: Belarus has always respected Cuba’s independence

Belarus has always supported Cuba in its aspiration to be an independent, sovereign state, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said as she met with the Cuban delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz on 12 June, BelTA has learned.

“I am sincerely pleased to welcome you to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. We are glad that the visits between representatives of our countries are so intensive and that the intergovernmental commission held another meeting to discuss further prospects of cooperation,” Natalya Kochanova said. “Belarus and Cuba are connected by a very close friendship despite the long distance. Of course, this is largely thanks to the leaders of our countries. The agreements which are in force between Belarus and Cuba are yielding results today."

Belarus and Cuba have similar positions on international issues, the speaker said.

“Our countries are doing their best to preserve sovereignty, independence. We are grateful to you for supporting our country on the international platform and in international organizations. We, in turn, have always supported Cuba in its aspiration to be an independent state. I would like to note that we have adopted the statement of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly to lift sanctions against Cuba, because we understand their effect in full. In fact, Belarus is in the same situation today, with sanctions imposed against us. We are doing our best to preserve the sovereignty and independence of our country,” Natalya Kochanova said.
