Academician: Belarus preserved scientific competences in post-Soviet period

Belarus managed to preserve and improve scientific competences after the collapse of the USSR, which allowed contemporary Belarusian science to show good results, Chief Academic Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vasily Gursky told a press conference, BelTA has learned.

“Belarusian science is focused on obtaining new knowledge, but at the same time it is practice-oriented. Thus, new knowledge translates into new technologies, experimental samples and prototypes, materials. The economic sector has the opportunity to scale up new solutions, use them in the manufacturing industry and develop new products. Science shapes the future, it is always forward-looking, but all solutions are based on the competencies accumulated by previous generations of scientists. Belarusian science compares favorably with many other countries, because during the collapse of the USSR we retained our competencies, we actively developed and accumulated new knowledge in various fields. Largely thanks to this, Belarus is now a space power and is actively exploring Antarctica,” said Vasily Gursky.

One of the promising areas of study is biotechnology. Belarus has a serious scientific background in this area, and research outputs have many practical applications. The Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation actively collaborates with scientists and uses their developments.

Belarus also promotes such a strategic direction as microelectronics. “Scientific support for microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and software is going to play an important role in the future,” the chief scientific secretary emphasized.

Research in the field of medicine, pharmacy, and the production of new materials with specified properties is also high on the agenda. So is the development of electric transport and unmanned vehicles. “The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has developed nearly an entire range of component parts for its electric transport - an electric motor, a gearbox, a software and hardware complex for vehicle control,” noted Vasily Gursky.
